As this reporter was leaving the Parkland Press office at 1633 N. 26th St., South Whitehall, at 10 a.m. Aug. 28, smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from behind Grandview Cemetery.
Sirens could be heard as volunteer firefighters from Greenawalds, Woodlawn, Cetronia, and Tri-Clover fire departments responded to a fire at South Whitehall Salvage, 2000 Minnich Road, South Whitehall.
Greenawalds Assistant Fire Chief Adam Garger told The Press at the scene that the fire started in a pile of scrap metal near an old garage.
“The fire was contained to the scrap metal,” he stated. “It was called under control around 10:30 a.m.”
Garger said the cause of the fire, which was called into 911 by employees of the salvage yard, is unknown.
There were no injuries reported
South Whitehall Township police, Cetronia Ambulance Corps personnel and Western Salisbury firefighters assisted at the scene.
