Saturday afternoon, something has to give.

Seeking its first win, Catasauqua (0-2) travels to winless Pen Argyl (0-2) Saturday when the host Green Knights also will be looking for their initial win this year.

Last Thursday night, the Roughies dropped their second game of the season, a 51-20 decision at Northern Lehigh, which ran for 363 yards and amassed 423 yards overall.

Catty fell behind, 2-0, midway through the opening quarter when a fourth-down snap in their zone sailed out of the end zone. The Roughies eventually fell behind 38-6 at the half.

“I thought we still played well defensively, and were flying to the ball,” said Roughies’ head coach Mike McClarin. “We made too many mistakes and that hurt us.

“Offensively, we did better. But obviously, we’re not where we want to be.”

McClarin was encouraged by the play of quarterback Adam Reinhart, who started his second varsity game.

“He did a lot better,” said McClarin about Reinhart. “He was more together and confident from his first game.

“He kept his composure and was in a better rhythm.”

McClarin also liked what he saw from sophomore linebacker Donovan Keys, who recovered a fumble, and senior running back Jakeem Jourdain, who rushed for 29 yards.

“Donovan (Keys) was playing linebacker for the first time this year,” said McClarin. “That was a huge play for us.

“He (Keys) is just one of those kids who hasn’t given up. Jakeem (Jourdain) ran the ball hard and he will help us.”

McClarin knows his lineup is littered with freshmen and sophomores.

“Northern Lehigh is a very physical team and they are a senior-laced team,” said McClarin. “Our guys are young and they are still adjusting. They have to learn to keep battling.”

The Roughies will face Pen Argyl, which is relatively healthy except for Jacob Scheier, who is in concussion protocol.

Pen Argyl will look to run the ball behind seniors Gavin Amerman (134 yards this season) and Conor Fehr (104). The Green Knights lost their opener to Salisbury, 27-15, and then suffered a 24-7 defeat to Saucon Valley last week.

“They (Pen Argyl) run a different offense, but they will run the ball,” said McClarin. “We just have to keep sending guys to the ball defensively.

“They are also a young team. We need to keep getting better.”

PREDICTION: This has the makings of an entertaining football game. Both teams are scuffling on both sides of the ball, replacing several skill players. The Roughies looked tired and lackadaisical most of the first half against Northern Lehigh. They will need to increase their intensity or else it will be a long afternoon on the fabled hill. If Catty strikes early, it may be able to gain control. But the Roughs still must figure a way to stop the run, which likely will be the deciding factor.
