Council does not vote on redistricting resolution

Northampton Borough Council has opted not to vote on adopting a resolution in support of a citizens’ commission for legislative and congressional redistricting.

Linda Smith, of Fair Districts PA, sought backing from the eight-member council by adopting a resolution or signing a letter of support regarding the issue of gerrymandering of legislative and congressional districts in the commonwealth.

Council had received a proposed resolution from Smith that stated citizens “deserve a fair, fully transparent, impartial and depoliticized process of the decennial drawing of state legislative and congressional districts of near equal population.

“Legislative and congressional redistricting has, at times, resulted in gerrymandered districts that favor one political party over others,” the proposed resolution continued.

Such gerrymandering of legislative and congressional districts has worked at times “to the detriment of our representative democracy,” according to the statement.

The proposed resolution also noted the borough’s support of legislative efforts to amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to assign the decennial task of both legislative and congressional redistricting to an independent citizens’ redistricting commission.

The matter came before council at sessions in June and July - and was again on the agenda at the Aug. 15 meeting. However, the matter never came to a vote.
