New Parkland girls cross country coach Stephen Ott takes over a program that has experienced success under Loretta Dodson, who retired this offseason after 17 seasons as head coach and 22 years overall.
Ott is no stranger to the Parkland community, having been a great athlete hat the school and serving as an assistant coach for various Trojan sports.
“Working with many of them during the track and field season gives me confidence in their abilities,” Ott said.
That confidence comes, in part, because of the quality and depth of the returning talent. Leading the way is junior Ava Bendetti, who finished 17th at districts last October with a 20:38 time.
Sophomore Emily Beers is also expected to have a strong season. During the District 11 3A Championship, Beers finished 23rd overall, registering a 20:57 mark. Ott will also rely on senior Lily Goense to spur Parkland’s success. She ran a good race last year at districts, finishing the course in 21:36, good for 40th place overall.
Lauren Williams and Ava Pugeda should also be factors.
“Their hard work during track and this summer will help them find success this season,” Ott said.
Newcomer Brooke Labenberg could also make her mark this year.
“She did well in track and I’m looking for the same thing in cross country,” said Ott.
Ott is a disciplined leader who believes in consistence and productivity.
“I believe you need to train fast to be fast,” he said. “I do not believe in empty miles.”
