Golf team has strong top five
First-year head Ryan Kilpatrick isn’t sure just how good his team might be this season, but he knows it’s going to among the contenders in the East Penn Conference and District 11.
The team graduated three players that reached the district championship tournament last year, but it also has several returning players that will help rebuild this year’s roster.
“I definitely feel like we can contend for the EPC title,” Kilpatrick said. “But being new, I am not sure what types of scores other teams will be posting, how different courses will affect our scores, and the overall depth needed to win these championships. Based on what I’ve seen so far, I think we have some good golfers and hopefully they can post some low scores in important matches to help us win.”
The graduation of John Panny, Chris Panny, John Angellela and James Grimm left the team with four holes to fill it’s in line up. Chris Panny and Angelella both shot 80 at last year’s district tournament to tie for seventh place. Grimm took 15th at districts with an 83.
Returning senior Trevor Grimm will anchor this year’s Trojan line up. He also shot 80 at districts last year to tie with his teammates for seventh place.
Grimm will be the team’s clear number one. He’ll be joined in the line up by seniors Ava Sweeney, Sam Mortazavi and Connor Nelson and sophomore James Kelly. And Parkland has several players who could fill in the final three spots in this year’s line up.
The rest of the roster includes seniors Khush Joshi, Kyle Hoke and Paige Diaz; junior Logan Leibenguth, Nicholas Atlas and Udit Garg; sophomores Dannielle Crenshaw, Georgi Butch, Jacquelynn Sobota and Lucy Schilling; and freshman Drew Cole.
The Trojans went 14-2 last season and only a late season loss to Emmaus kept the Trojans from earning a share of the EPC title. While last year’s team had 8-10 players that could make the line up and contribute, this year’s team has a clear top five with two players at the top in Grimm and Kelly that will be looked upon to lead their team in most or all of its matches.
“We don’t have the depth we have had in the past, but if our 1-5 show up, I think we can score pretty well,” said Kilpatrick. “It looks like Trevor is our clear number 1 and he is in good form early this season, so I am expecting big things.
“James Kelly is a sophomore that is going to be our number 2. He looks great early this season, his scoring and form are consistent, and he has the drive and passion to keep improving his game. I am expecting a strong performance all season long and in future seasons.
“Sam and Connor have improved a lot since last year and seem to be more consistent with their scoring this year (probably our 3 and 4). While Ava Sweeney is our top female and our number 5 consistently shooting in the low to mid 80s.
The team opened the season on Aug. 15 with a 419-426 win over Easton and a 400-419 loss to Central Catholic in a trimatch. The Trojans then swept a quad match with a score of 399, which was good enough to beat Whitehall (543), Stroudsburg (468) and Pocono Mountain East (462). The dropped their next match 379-397 against Nazareth on Aug. 22.
The Trojans still have to face two other EPC favorites this season when the meet Liberty (Sept. 3 at Iron Lakes) and Emmaus (Sept. 17 at Iron Lakes).
