East Allen to seek grant for revamping intersection
With scheduled improvements at the intersection of Airport Road and Route 329, a state grant for traffic improvements became less critical. So at the East Allen Township Board of Supervisors meeting Aug. 22, township Engineer James Milot suggested the funds be shifted to the intersection of Hanoverville and Airport roads.
“We can better use the funds there to improve the intersection,” he said.
According to Milot, the problem at the slightly complex intersection is that the traffic control lights are supported by aluminum masts that are too short.
“Tractor-trailers are hitting the masts,” he said. “We have had at least four recent hits.”
The funds are available through the state’s Automated Red Light Enforcement program, which is designed to improve traffic at busy intersections where motorists often run red lights. The original plan was to use funds for the Route 329 intersection, but changes are expected to improve the safety of that intersection.
Supervisors voted to propose using the funds to raise the masts at Hanoverville Road.
The board also instructed Milot to proceed with a demolition bid for the abandoned property at 6710 Weaversville Road. The property is located adjacent to Bicentennial Park and is being considered for a possible municipal complex. The immediate need is for a better location for the public works department. The facility was used as a state psychiatric hospital and later as a juvenile detention facility.
Preliminary estimates for removing the structure were high. Since the project is not a priority, the township wants to have contractors look at completing the task as the construction season quiets down over the winter months. The township has money due from gaming grants and is looking for a commitment from Northampton County for additional grants.
The project would concentrate on the main building. Several outbuildings would be handled at a later date.
