Truck traffic continues to be a concern

Northampton Borough is witnessing a spike in the number of large box trucks on borough streets since the opening of the FedEx Ground warehouse in Allen Township. According to council, there has also been an increase in the number of residents’ complaints.

At the Aug. 15 borough council meeting, a man residing in the area of Howertown Road and Fourth Street appealed to borough lawmakers and administration to take action. He mentioned the trucks pose a danger to the community when they make tight turns on local roads not intended for larger vehicles.

Councilman Robert McHale said he has spoken to several residents regarding the truck concerns. He said he will head a committee to meet with residents to discuss the issue further and identify possible solutions.

McHale invited his colleagues on council to join the committee.

The GPS system used by the truck drivers was mentioned as being part of the problem. It was noted some trucks may be turning onto Bullshead Road from Willowbrook Road after leaving the Fed- Ex Ground warehouse. The trucks then enter the borough on Howertown Road or Fourth Street.

Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst said setting up and manning a weigh station for the box trucks would be expensive.

The borough had previously posted signs regarding weight limits for trucks.

The problem is only going to get worse, residents told council members, with warehouses planned for a stretch of Route 329 in East Allen Township.
