The Salisbury Township Environmental Advisory Council will host an informational evening for the community, ”Residential Recycling and How to Do It The Right Way” 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Salisbury Township municipal building, 2900 S. Pike Ave., Allentown. The presentation will include how impact of contamination affects recycling and what residential recycling materials are accepted for curbside pickup.

The beginning of the 2019-2020 school year for all Salisbury Township students is upon us. I sit here with the realization that the summer fun is over and it is time to shift gears. Welcome back to the early mornings of packing lunches and making sure homework is done in the evenings.

The first day for students in grades kindergarten. six and nine will be Aug. 26 for an orientation day. All bus and school information is now live on the portal and available for viewing.

All township students will report for the first day Aug. 27. All township schools will be closed for the Labor Day holiday weekend Aug. 30 and Sept. 2, with school re-opening Sept. 3 for all students.

Harry S Truman Elementary School will host the next dine and donate at MaGia’s Friendly Italian Aug. 21. A portion of all sales, with a mention of the fundraiser, will be donated to the PTO to help with costs for the year. Please support this cause if you’re able.

Speaking of the beginning of school, Salisbury Middle School will kick off its year with the start of the main fundraiser for the year. Stay tuned for information to be sent home with your middle school student. Let’s make it a good one.

For those who have students at HST, please note the back-to-school dinner will be held 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 6. Look for information to be sent home and hope to see you there.

Wildlands Conservancy is offering two free hands-on programs Sept. 21 at Riverview Park in East Penn Township. Build bluebird and wood duck boxes in the morning and then stay to tag and release monarch butterflies before they make their way to Mexico. The Bluebird & Duck House Building Workshop will be 9-11 a.m.

Attendees will build bluebird, house wren and wood duck boxes to increase nesting opportunities at Riverview Park. Learn about these native bird species, help hang the boxes and learn how and when to help monitor them throughout the year. Wildlands will supply the kits, tools and instructions. These nesting boxes will remain at the park for this important stewardship project.

Stay for the monarch tagging program 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monarch tagging is citizen science at its best! The purpose of the tagging is to associate the location of capture with the point of recovery for each butterfly. The data from these recaptures helps to determine the pathways taken by migrating monarchs, the influence of weather on the migration and the survival rate of the monarchs. Learn how to capture, hold and tag these fragile beings and then create milkweed seed bombs to help create new habitat. The location for both events is Riverview Park, Palmerton.
