Misericordia students complete diagnostic medical sonography certificate program

Misericordia University, Dallas, Luzerne County, recently recognized the 15th graduating class from the Diagnostic Medical Sonography certificate program and the second cohort from the Bachelor of Science degree program during the annual Sonography Recognition Ceremony in Sandy and Marlene Insalaco Hall.

Twelve students completed the rigorous 18-month certificate program, which includes classroom and clinical instruction.

The sonography program - more commonly referred to as ultrasound - is for adult or nontraditional learners who possess the necessary prerequisites.

The program offers a convenient and predictable schedule with alternating weekend classes and a weekday clinical component. Classes begin every August.

Students who completed the certificate program in March are Erin Baltusavich, West Wyoming; Danielle Blair, Honesdale; Amanda Bounds, Elmira, N.Y.; Jayne Confalone of Allentown; Alondra Fernandez of Hazleton; Kayla Krasnavage of Wilkes-Barre; Kelsey Manning of Parkesburg; Tonya Ossowski of Plains Township; Theodosia Schneider of Otis, Maine; Michelle Sehested of Kings Park, N.Y.; Paige Shaugnessy of Apalachin, N.Y., and Shannon Young of Hardwick, N.J.

Rebecca Flick of Allentown; Kristine Holdorf of Freehold, N.J.; Danielle Owens of Mattydale, N.Y.; Kristin Petruzelli of Howell, N.J., and Cara Spector of West Deptford, N.J. received entry-level Bachelor of Science degrees in diagnostic medical sonography during the spring commencement ceremony in May.

Misericordia has the region’s only entry-level Bachelor of Science degree program in diagnostic medical sonography.

Sonographers perform a diagnostic medical procedure that uses ultrasound to produce dynamic visual images of human organs, tissues or blood flow inside the body.

Sonographers work in various medical settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics and physician offices under the supervision of a physician specialist in radiology, gynecology, obstetrics, pediatrics, vascular surgery, cardiology or ophthalmology.
