North Catasauqua recycles electronics

The Borough of North Catasauqua held its fourth annual electronic recycling event July 27. From 9 a.m. to noon, borough residents brought all of their broken, outdated or unwanted electronics to the public works building, 1460 Main St.

Tom Kish, public works official, assisted three employees from Responsible Recycling Services, Corey Kershner, Gabe Knerr and Freddie Strohl, in loading the truck with boxes of old televisions, computers, monitors, cellphones and other electronic appliances.

Among the horde of junked technology were several large TVs, which people were more than happy to finally get out of their homes.

The service was entirely free for borough residents, with the exception of a charge for taking television sets. RRS takes any TV under 40 inches for $35 and anything larger for $55.

Most junkyards and dumps will charge by the pound. RRS’ pricing makes it much more affordable to responsibly dispose of obsolete big screens, which can easily weigh more than 100 pounds.

Based in Kutztown, RRS has several drop-off locations, including one at 2005 Main St., Northampton.

The company also lists future recycling events on its website, responsiblerecyclingservices.com.

By the end of the day, the RRS truck was full of boxes, indicating the need for such an event and likely ensuring it will continue in the future.
