Fred “Fritz” Browning

Fred “Fritz” Browning, 84, of Northampton and formerly of Allentown, died July 21, 2019, in his home. He was the husband of Lilyan (Bowen) Browning for 52 years.

Born in Mauch Chunk, he was a son of Frederick and Nora (Cleary) Browning.

He was a 1952 graduate of Allentown High School.

He was a Spc. E-4 in the U.S. Army.

He worked at PP&L until he retired after 34 years.

He was a volunteer for many charitable causes. He was a volunteer at the Good Shepherd Home where he organized the annual fishing outing for residents for more than 15 years and coordinated fundraising efforts. He also organized fishing outings for inner city children and, for several years, organized and coordinated the Lehigh County Fish and Game essay contest for middle and high school students. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity building houses and was instrumental in obtaining a grant from the Department of Environmental Resources for the restoration of the water wheel at the Allentown Fish Hatchery. He was a former vice president of the Lehigh County Fish and Game Commission.

He was awarded the PPL Distinguished Community Service Award and the Allentown Human Relations Award.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by nieces and nephews, Pamela Wilson McMahon with George of Drexel Hill, Michael Wilson with Carrie of Center Valley, Dr. Mark Wilson with Alice of Allentown, Donna Bowen Werley with Michael of Northampton, Kathleen, Jeffrey, Christopher and Michael Bowen and Robert, Brenda and Debra Browning.

He was predeceased by four siblings, Charles, Samuel and Robert Browning and Elizabeth van Hoevenberg.

There will be a graveside service 10:30 a.m. Aug. 12 at Grandview Cemetery, 2735 Walbert Ave., Allentown.
