It’s mid-July in Catasauqua and playoff basketball is starting to heat up.

The Catty League reached the quarterfinal stage Tuesday, and the North Catty League finds itself in a similar situation. The nearby Stiles league in Whitehall will begin their playoffs next week.

All three leagues will crown champions that will participate in the upcoming 30th anniversary of the Tournament of Champions in early August.

In the three quarterfinals games in the Catty League, Catty Corner met CX2 Motor Sports, Ohlson Landscaping faced Rocky Hill, and GR Electric tangled with G&S, which is undefeated in the league. G&S won the Tournament of Champions in 2007 and 2008.

Catasauqua head boys’ basketball coach and Catty League coordinator Eric Snyder is excited to have his team, representing GR Electric, in the quarterfinals. They beat Saucon Valley to advance.

“We handled them,” said Snyder about Saucon Valley. “Saucon Valley had five forfeits this season and it has been disappointing.

“But our kids have played really well. They have battled all summer.”

Center Derek George has continued to progress from the season. He has been a force down low all summer.

Snyder also has been impressed with Derek Troxell, Cole Schiffer, Mason Hess, Damian DiPaolo, Donovan Walakovits, and Jacob Smith. Ty Reitz, who was coping with injuries, recently returned.

“Derek has really been a force for us,” said Snyder. “Derek Troxell and Cole Schiffer have been consistent, and Mason Hess has played extremely well.

“Damian DiPaolo has a lot of energy, and Donovan Walakovits and Jacob Smith have done everything.”

Catty Corner has been led by former Northampton standouts Derek and Phil Hall as well as James Snyder, the coach’s son. Northampton grads Aidan Elwood and Garrett Oplinger and Catty grads Derrick Bond and Anthony Brinkley have helped set the pace.

Derek Hall won the Tournament of Champions MVP last season leading Curmaci Dental.

CX2 is led by former Roughie standout Saquon Mason as well as Catty grad Josh Yoo and former area standouts Toomey Anderson and Ray Barone.

Ohlson Landscaping has been led by former Allen standouts Ray Barbosa and Darnell Braswell, while Rocky Hill also features former Northampton players.

G&S has feature former Moravian College players Mike Frew and Kenny Greb and former Tournament of Champions MVP Brett Williams.
