Joseph R. Sommer, 61, of Whitehall, died July 3, 2019, in his residence. He was the husband of Jean (Sharkazy) Sommer for 28 years.

Born in Allentown, he was a son of Joseph G. and Patricia (Betz) Sommer of Coplay.

He was a 1975 graduate of Whitehall High School. He graduated from Muhlenberg College and earned a Master of Business Administration from DeSales University.

He was a general manager for Carpenter Company, Fogelsville, for 16 years. Before that, he was a quality control manager for the former C.R. Bearing Seals Division, Bethlehem.

He was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Parish, Catasauqua.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a son, Elijah R. at home; three daughters, Gabrielle R. and her husband Jacob Donchez of Grantham, N.H., Hannah E., at home and Kristin of Whitehall; three brothers, Christopher of Coplay and Jeffrey with Janice and Timothy with Sara of Whitehall; two sisters, Sandra and her husband Randy Knecht of Nazareth and Charlotte and her husband Timothy Minnich of Walnutport; nieces; and nephews.
