Blast off!

The Public Library of Catasauqua’s summer program continues to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing by exploring all things space.

Students were visited July 9 by Katie Sheperd, from the Da Vinci Science Center, who came equipped with an air-powered launchpad and all the materials needed for the kids to craft their very own rockets for a fun rocket launch experiment.

After a brief demonstration from Sheperd, the students got to work with newspaper, construction paper and tape to build what they all hoped would be the farthest-flying rocket. The body of the rocket simply needed to be a cylinder that could fit around the tube of the launchpad, but there was much debate about the ideal number and size of wings.

Once everyone had completed their first model, it was time for a test launch. One by one, the students loaded their rockets onto the launcher and stomped down on the air pedal to send them flying through the hallway.

Results varied depending on the construction of each rocket, but every student was encouraged to try another design to improve on the first launch. After a few cycles of designing, building and testing, everyone understood what the rocket needed to launch properly.

In the end, almost all of them made it to the end of the hallway.
