Kalman Sarkozy Sr., LHS soccer coach

Kalman Sarkozy Sr., 74, of Bethlehem Township, died June 26, 2019, at St. Luke’s VNA Hospice House, Bethlehem. He was the husband of Harriet (Kaplan) Sarkozy for 54 years.

Born in Szentgotthard, Hungary, he was a son of the late Ferenc “Frank” and Maria (Szarka) Sarkozy.

After emigrating to the U.S. in 1956, he was a welder for Mack Trucks. He was the head soccer coach at Liberty High School from 1980 to 2003, and was an assistant coach for the team from 2005 to 2017. He was a co-director of the Lehigh Valley Summer Soccer League for more than 30 years. He was an Olympic Development soccer coach and coached soccer camps.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

He was a member of the Liberty High School Sport Hall of Fame and of the PIAA Soccer Hall of Fame. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Erika Sarkozy Barron and her husband Joseph of Bethlehem; a son, Kalman Jr. of Bethlehem; four grandchildren, Julius and Olivia Sarkozy and John and Kalman Barron; and a brother, Sandor Sarkozy of Florida.

He was predeceased by five siblings, William, Julius, Rudolf and Jozsef Sarkozy; and Vilma Desaknay.
