LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Sister City friendships

The Slovenian flag raising ceremony, held in recognition of the 28th anniversary of Slovenia’s independence and the 23rd anniversary of the Bethlehem-Murska Sobota Sister Cities Association, was held in city hall June 21 due to inclement weather. About 40 residents attended the annual ceremony.

Mayor Bob Donchez welcomed attendees and recognized the contributions of Slovenians in the Bethlehem area.

Frank Podleiszek and Betty Sylva sang the American and Slovenian National Anthems to the accompaniment of accordionist Alex Gergar and the Reverend Ron Hari gave the invocation and benediction.

Slovenian Minister Miha Erman and Slovenian Correspondent Robi Poredos each addressed the gathering noting the warm friendships that have developed as a result of the Sister City relationship between Bethlehem and Murska Sobota.

Founder Stephen Antalics was also recognized as he celebrated his 90th birthday on the same date and was presented a plaque from current Sister Cities president Eugene Novak commemorating his efforts.

A luncheon followed at Saucon Valley Acres.
