Allen Twp. sets fireworks curfew
Solicitor Lincoln Treadwell told Allen Township Board of Supervisors, at its June 25 meeting, that he believes modifications can be made to the state laws regarding fireworks.
Supervisors wanted the new restrictions to be in place by Independence Day. Treadwell modified the nuisance ordinance to include hours that fireworks can be discharged. Fireworks discharges are banned from 10 p.m. to noon during the week. On weekends, the time is extended until 11 p.m.
Fireworks cannot be discharged if there is a fire ban.
There are several state restrictions on fireworks. The key restriction is fireworks must be more than 150 feet away from a building when set off. In closely packed residential areas, the separation distance rules out fireworks completely. It might not prevent people from discharging fireworks, but it does set a standard for enforcement.
First-time offenders get a warning notice and a letter from the township. Repeat offenders and long-term violators need to be prepared to pay fines.
In other business, supervisors noted Northampton Borough is considering increasing its quarterly sewer bill. There are various proposals on the table, so Treadwell suggested the township forgo its review until after the new rates are finalized.
The long-anticipated and often-delayed salt shed project has a revised design. There are technical details to be worked out, including provisions for grade slope, which was not covered.
Supervisors approved an intergovernmental agreement that allows a school resource officer at Catasauqua High School. Catasauqua High School is located in Allen Township, requiring an agreement between Allen Township and Catasauqua Borough. This agreement is a notification that Catasauqua police officers will be on site at the school.
