Kids are having fun in the sun
“Mom, there’s nothing to do!”
Not so in Catasauqua Borough - the Fun in the Sun program started its 20th year June 17 at Catasauqua Park and Playground, 501 American St.
This year, the leaders who started the program to get kids outside and playing are active again.
“We have all kinds of events set up. We have a miniature golf trip later this week, and they always enjoy that,” Kim Labezius said.
There are plenty of kids around.
“We usually get around 50 most every day,” Lisa Casciotti said.
The goal is to return the kids to their homes with a great experience from the day.
New for this year, the borough sponsored a summer program for teens.
“For a first-year program, we have a lot of sign-ups,” said Jessica Kroope, who is chairwoman of the recreation committee.
The first two weeks of the program has teens painting a mural on the amphitheater stage. Dan Kotran, art teacher at Sheckler Elementary School, is directing the artistic effort.
“I wanted to design something that is colorful and easy to do,” he said.
Attendees of the June 21 concert, which featured Scott Marshall and Marshall’s Highway, got to view the mural.
Kotran said they “might tweak it a little after the concert.”
Deb Mellish has the next two programs.
“We have sign-ups for the history class and gardening,” she said.
History class will start at Historic Catasauqua Preservation Association’s museum.
“We want some of the kids to research their family history in the community,” she said.
The next week is earthy instruction on growing plants.
The last week is computer science and technology. Classes will use the computers at Catasauqua Middle School. Computer instruction is the most popular program so far.
There is still an opportunity to get signed up for future programs.
