When he took the job a year ago, Catasauqua head girls’ basketball coach Mark Seremula knew it would be a lengthy process.

He took over a team last year that had a 4-18 mark the previous season, and the Roughies went 3-19 in his first season last year.

This summer, however, Seremula has reason to see the process begin to accelerate.

The Roughies posted a 2-2 record from the small school bracket in the recent competitive Cedar Beach Showcase, and they have had a healthy turnout for league games and workouts.

“I was very pleased with our performance at Cedar Beach,” said the ever-optimistic Seremula. “We played hard and we beat Allen’s B team and Parkland’s B team, and we lost to Emmaus’ and Whitehall’s varsity team.

“Things have been going really well for us this summer.”

Prior to the Cedar Beach tournament, the Roughies had a good showing in the Patti Heffner Memorial Tournament at Parkland in which they played four games. They are playing in the Catty League this summer.

“We have had about 16 or 17 girls out to our games and workouts,” added Seremula. “We usually have around 12 or so for a game, and we have a couple of sophomores out this summer. We have five incoming freshmen who have looked good.”

The Roughies did lose five seniors from last year’s team, but they have returned incoming seniors forward Maddie Hicks and center Shaziya Roberts, both of whom saw considerable playing time last season.

Also in the mix will be juniors Lexi Rushatz, who is back at the point, along with fellow juniors Emma Hawk and Olivia Emery. Sophomore Aidan Gerhart and Bronwyn Pacchioli are back and saw time last year.

Incoming freshmen Cora Soltis, Kaylee Weidaw, and Briell Carvalho already made their presence felt during the summer.

“They are all playing well during the summer,” added Seremula about his core. “The freshmen can even get some more playing time. We have some girls with size as well.

“Lexi (Rushatz) is playing a lot of travel soccer during the summer, so we have had some girls stepping up to play the point. Aidan Gerhard and Bronwyn Pacchioli have been working at guard spots and getting better. If they all can continue to develop, that will help us.”

After the Catty League season, the Roughies will continue to have workout through the end of July. They then will resume workouts in October.

With numbers and enthusiasm on the rise, Seremula has an optimistic outlook.

“We have good numbers in middle school and we should have more than 30 girls next year,” he said. “We just have to continue to build and progress.”
