Borough council fills vacant seat

Catasauqua Borough Council took the first part of its workshop meeting June 24 to interview candidates for the vacant seat on council.

All of the candidates were given an opportunity to present their views and answer questions from council. Two names were submitted for nominations. Tammi Hauser received the required three votes in the first round of voting.

Hauser will be sworn in at borough council’s regular meeting July 1. She replaces Christine Weaver, who resigned last month.

Also at the July 1 meeting, council will review the refuse contract. According to Solicitor Thomas Dinkelacker, the contract expires in August.

In other business, complaints about fireworks continue to come into the borough. Councilman Brian McKittrick emphasized the complaints need to be sent to the police.

Dinkelacker indicated the state law on fireworks has certain provisions that essentially prohibit the discharge of fireworks in the borough. The problem, as Police Chief Douglas Kish emphasized, is that in order to cite someone, officers need to catch the offender in the act.

The course of action the police are taking now is that they go to the area where fireworks are reported and talk to the people in the area, hoping that they will stop discharging the fireworks.

McKittrick indicated the borough will add a stop sign at the intersection of Middle and Crane streets. A four-way stop at Liberty and Limestone streets was deemed unnecessary at this time. Homeowners in the area were concerned about child safety; the borough will install a “Watch Children” sign.
