After they had less than their share of victories during the regular season, Wilquon Clemons and Andrew Martinez recently ended their high school careers on a high note.

Both participated for the Red team that posted a 28-14 victory over the Gold squad in the 49th Annual McDonald’s Lehigh Valley All-Star Football Classic at Nazareth High School’s Andrew S. Leh Stadium June 13.

The game was tied at 14-14 at halftime before the Red squad rallied for two second-half scores to gain their first victory since 2015. The game was married by 19 penalties for 184 yards with two player ejections.

Clemons and Martinez, who were the team’s leading rusher respectively for their 1-9 team last fall, both were defensive backs for the game.

“Playing in the game was a great experience,” said Clemons. “I enjoyed every minute of it. I was very shocked about how well we all played together with only two weeks of practice.

“I was able to do what I love for a great cause, so there weren’t any negatives to the experience.”

Martinez had a similar reaction to the experience. He plans to either begin a career with the United States Marine Corps or the National Guard.

“It was a great experience playing with kids I never thought I would be friends with,” said Martinez. “Also, lining up against EPC (East Penn Conference) kids and competing with them was great.

“Seeing how we match up against them (EPC kids) was one of my favorite parts.”

Whitehall senior Joe Herman ended his high school career on another highlight as he caught nine passes for 228 yards with a touchdown to help pace the Red team.

Herman caught a go-ahead, 54-yard touchdown pass from Southern Lehigh quarterback Logan Edmond in the third quarter.

“It was a great experience playing in the game and playing with these guys,” said Herman, who will attend King’s University in the fall. “This is a great way to end my high school career. It was a lot of fun out there with all-stars from both teams and come out with a win.

“The whole week we (with Edmond) really hit it off, and the connection was there during the game.”

Other like Catasauqua defensive back Andrew Martinez, who also was a member of the Red squad, also will cherish the memory.

“It was a great experience playing with kids I never thought I would be friends with,” said Martinez. “Also, lining up against EPC (East Penn Conference) kids and competing with them was great.

“Seeing how we match up against them (EPC kids) was one of my favorite parts.”
