With team names like “Chapter Raptors” and the “Novel Nifflers,” 253 area middle school students organized into 21 teams competed April 11 at Lower Macungie Middle School for top honors in reading comprehension at the Reading Olympics.
Organizers gave each team a list of 45 books to read.
Northwestern Lehigh School District Team, Lynx, included Kira Jobman, Nathaniel Smolinsky, Becca Schuler, Jordan Allen, Zackary Hassan, Rachel Eck, and Shannon Green.
Team “Columbian Book Weasels” from Orefield Middle School placed second.
Each member of the team received a copy of “Refugee” by Alan Gratz.
English Language Arts Teacher Robin Roberts sponsored the team.
Team “Readers of Unusual Sarcasm” of Slatington’s Northern Lehigh Middle School placed first in the competition, while the “Weatherly Wreckers” from Weatherly Area Middle School placed third.
First, second and third place winners received a set of new books as the team prize.
There is no state or higher level of competition.
Eyer Middle School’s “Eye Reads Team 1” placed fourth and fifth place honors went to team “Book Bandits -Heist No. 2” from St. Joseph the Worker.
