Tavern plans ribbon cutting
The Log Cabin Tavern, a landmark in Coplay Borough for more than eight decades, has been revitalized with new owners and a new name - while maintaining the atmosphere of a neighborhood tavern.
Matt and Mark Hartman, brothers with roots in the borough, opened the establishment as the 2nd St. Tavern April 24, following a remake of the iconic tavern and while keeping intact its features. Those features include interior logged walls, a working fireplace and a long L-shaped bar with beveled wooden trim and the original concrete support.
The exterior facade includes the original logs.
“Refurbishing the handsome stone fireplace is a feature,” the Hartmans said, agreeing they took pride in bringing it to prominence.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the establishment, located at 33 N. Second St., Coplay, is set for 5:30-7 p.m. June 27.
Opened in 1936 by Frank Kulitz, a renowned big game hunter who also built and opened the once-adjoining bowling alleys, the tavern was more than a watering hole for residents. Its weekend polka dances drew many townspeople from the borough and beyond.
“We want the people coming here to enjoy it as a neighborhood tavern,” Matt Hartman said.
The tavern has already created a buzz among the locals, giving the once major business street in town a feel for the past and a boost for the future.
The atmosphere is casual, so patrons can enjoy themselves while having some food, listening to entertainment on weekends and just coming to relax.
The menu features a variety of pub food - fries loaded with bacon, homemade pierogies, pizza, hot sandwiches, appetizers, chicken finger baskets and breaded shrimp, just to name a few. There are also daily specials.
“We added a second bar with special features,” the Hartmans said, believing it to be the only such bar in the region.
Located in the northeast section of the tavern, the second bar “is strictly Pennsylvania. Only craft beer, wine and spirits from Pennsylvania breweries will be stocked,” they said.
Another conservation piece is a mural on the back wall of the second bar. Obscured for years, the painting covers a large area depicting an outdoor scene, an angler fishing at a brook framed by trees and foliage.
New hardwood flooring has been installed in the large dining area, and laminate flooring has been placed in the area the bar occupies. The ceiling, with wooden beams and planks, complements the log walls. Pub-style tables and chairs are scattered around the spacious tavern.
Two new pool tables and a dart board are in place, as are televisions across the bar and dining area. With more-than-adequate room for dancing, the Hartmans said live entertainment is already scheduled.
The tavern is open seven days a week. Summer hours are noon-midnight Sundays and noon-1:30 a.m. Mondays-Saturdays.
