E. Allen resident concerned about trash
Joe Renco, a property owner along Weaversville Road, asked East Allen Township Board of Supervisors at its meeting June 12 to investigate a property he says was improperly used to dump trash.
According to Renco, the property at 6125 Weaversville Road was used as a goat farm for at least a decade.
“It was an older lady who owned it, and the use was grandfathered in,” he said.
According to Renco, manure from the farming operation eventually decomposed into the aquifer, causing contamination to his well.
“I put on an ultraviolet light filter to reduce the contaminants,” he said.
To add to the problems, the property was used for dumping.
“There were piles of debris dumped on the property. I complained about it, but there was a long delay. One day, someone came out with digging equipment and buried the trash,” he said.
Renco has videos and pictures of the property, but he is concerned with the property going forward.
“There is a pending sale of the property. I think the new owner should be aware that trash is dumped on the site,” he said.
Supervisor Mark Schwartz, acting chairman in the absence of Roger Unangst, assured Renco the property would be reviewed. The township has input into the transfer process and may recommend testing soils to ensure that no contaminants lurk under the soil.
East Allen Township Zoning Hearing Board had two hearings scheduled for June 18. One hearing is a request by PDW Properties for a zoning variance. The property now used as a miniature golf course has an agricultural use at the rear of the property. PDW wants to have a permitted commercial use at the front of the property and a residential use at the rear. The proposal would build an apartment complex behind the commercial use.
Airport Road Partners is asking for the second hearing. Its proposal for property at Hanoverville and Airport roads would include a gas station similar to Turkey Hill on Route 512. Zoning does not permit gas stations. Airport Road Partners contends the store is a convenience store, which is permitted.
