Josephine Marie Balshai, former St. Anne’s R.C. Church member
Josephine Marie Balshai died on June 12, 2019. She was a daughter of the late Anna and John J. Bartos of Bethlehem. She was the wife of the late Stephen F. Balshi, M.D., F.A.C.S., for 66 years.
She was a 1938 graduate of the Villa Sacred Heart Academy, Danville; and a 1940 graduate of the Bethlehem Business College.
She managed the Bartos Insurance Agency for six years.
She was a treasurer of both the Friends of Music of Bethlehem and of St. Anne R.C. Catholic Church’s activities group. At St. Anne’s, she chaired the church pipe organ capital campaign. She and her late husband organized and led trips abroad for church members; they established the St. Anne’s School Balshi Scholarship. Upon joining the Assumption Church Parish, Center Valley, she was involved in parish life, committees and capital campaigns.
She was a charter member and treasurer of the Bethlehem Serra Club. She volunteered with “Meals On Wheels” for more than 15 years. She was a member of the American Cancer Society of Bethlehem, the St. Luke’s Hospital Ladies’ Auxiliary, and volunteered in the hospital gift shop.
She is survived by a sister, Annamae Bartos Guff; a cousin, The Rev. Francis Bartos; six children, Thomas J., D.D.S., F. A. C. P., and his wife Joanne of Pennsylvania and Florida; Stephen J. Balshi of Pennsylvania; Mary Ann and her husband Thomas L. Okner, M.D., F.A.C.S., of Florida; Kathleen A., M.D., and her husband Frank T. Kucer, M.D. of Pennsylvania and Florida; James D., M.D. F.A.C.S., and his wife Jill, R.N., of Pennsylvania; and Philip J. Balshi and his wife Pamela Scott, J.D., LLD., of New York; thirteen grandchildren, Anne-Kristin Balshi; Thomas C., M.D. and his wife Brittany Balshi; Stephen F. II and his wife Caitlin Balshi; Timothy and his wife Saraya Balshi; Michael, Ph.D. and his wife Carolyn Balshi, Pharm.D.; Catherine Okner Schobert, J.D. and her husband Christopher R. Schobert; Michelle E. Okner; Paul T. Okner, J.D. and his wife Alexandra T. Okner, M.A.; Jeffrey Kucer, M.A. and his wife Diana Coleman Kucer; Brian Kucer, M.D. and his wife Kate Murray, M.D.; Andrew Kucer, J.D. and his wife Sheryl Kucer, CFP; Daniel Kucer; Christopher Balshi and his wife Laree Beans; and Andrew C. Balshi and his wife Bronwen Balshi, M.A.
She was predeceased by a sister, Mary; two brothers, The Rt. Rev. Msgr. John V. Bartos of the Philadelphia Archdiocese and Joseph E. Bartos, M.D.; and three miscarried children.
