4th annual Dave DiGiacinto golf tournament
Q: Cristina Byrne for the Bethlehem Press
A: Frank Storey, Coastal Employee Benefits Group and event organizer
Q: How many people showed up this year? More or less compared to last year?
A: We had 96 golfers this year and last year we had 81. We had 110 people at the after party, as well as the outdoor pavilion at the clubhouse grille.
Q: I am curious to know more about Dave DiGiacinto, aka DiGi; he seems like somewhat of a respectable guy to have these people show up and golf together. What are some of Dave’s notable qualities?
A: Dave was a Bethlehem boy and Liberty High School football-baseball player class of ‘71. He played both at Army. Flew fighter jets in the Air Force after graduating West Point. Respected businessman at Pfizer and then working at Spencer Trask after being away from Bethlehem for a while. He was also former city controller of Bethlehem, noted for his honesty and no bs approach to handling situations professionally and with his friends. He used to run an annual bus trip to the Army-Navy game for at least 30 years; epic trips where friends coworkers and his alumni would get a chance to interact.
Q: How far have some people traveled for this event?
A: Attendees range from high school friends, former work associates, a majority of attendees are friends from the area accumulated over the years. His sister, Sally Horan, makes the trip every year from Texas.
Q: Why are you the one organizing it? Do you organize it every year?
A: I organize and run the tourney every year for his family and friends, along with his former wife Kelly DiGiacinto. We choose Boys and Girls Club every year because Dave used to sit on the board and actively fundraise for the boys and girls of Bethlehem so they would have some additional after-school activities. He had a commitment to “pay it forward” and help other people, as do all of the participants in this annual event.
