COURT OF HONOR
The date of May 25 was a day to remember for three young men who achieved Scouting excellence.
Anthony Howorth, Carter Lowell and Samuel Walker of Troop 131 received their Eagle Scout Badges after years of dedication and service during a ceremony at Faith Presbyterian Church in Emmaus.
The honor places the three youngsters in exclusive company. Fewer than 3 percent of all Scouts achieve the rank, according to Greg O’Neill, a former Troop 131 Committee Chair.
During the ceremony, the three young men learned about the significance of the Eagle Court of Honor from Scout colleagues Lino Sanchez, Gabe Helmer, Graham Lowell, Lucas Samuels and Ian Zakos.
Prior to receiving their honors, they were issued the Eagle Scout Challenge by Eagle Scout Cawley Waters. He told the Scouts they are entering a unique fraternity where their character, work ethic, morals and allegiance to God and the United States should be impeccable and last a lifetime.
The boys were presented with their Eagle Scout Badges by Troop 131 assistant Scoutmasters Dave Digiacomo, Dan Killingsworth and Jim McElhenney. A few moments later, the newly-minted Eagle Scouts presented their parents with their own pins.
Pennsylvania Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-134th, also in attendance, acknowledged the boys’ accomplishments with proclamations.
Howorth, the son of Steve and Tammi, progressed through the ranks where he held various leadership positions including patrol leader, bugler and senior patrol leader. He was elected to the Order of the Arrow and completed his Ordeal.
For his Eagle project, Howorth constructed an outdoor gathering space at Faith Presbyterian. The project was challenging. It required the Emmaus High School senior to engage in fundraising, excavation, leveling and work to install brick pavers and finally regrading.
After graduating in June, Howorth will study fire science at Bucks County Community College, while continuing to serve as a volunteer firefighter with the Lower Macungie Fire Department.
Lowell, the son of Geoff and Ann, has embraced leadership. While in Scouts, he has served as a scribe, assistant patrol leader, patrol leader and troop guide. Lowell was elected to the Order of the Arrow and completed his Ordeal.
His Eagle Scout project was to beautify the playground at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Trexlertown, where he attended pre-school. He led a team that built new benches, restored a metal bus, secured the wooden perimeter and spread new mulch.
Lowell is finishing his junior year at Emmaus High School. Looking forward, he plans to study engineering in college. With his remaining free time, he plays percussion with the concert band, the marching band and other various school musical groups. Lowell is also a member of the Math League and National Honor Society. When the weather turns frigid, he serves as a ski instructor at Bear Creek.
Walker, the son of Erik and Beth, progressed methodically through the ranks. He held leadership positions as scribe and served twice as patrol leader. Walker was elected to the Order of the Arrow and completed his Ordeal. For his Eagle Scout project, he designed and created four large mobile chicken coops for use at Flint Hill Farm in Coopersburg, enabling the farm’s chickens and ducks to live in a natural and pasture-like environment.
He is currently a junior at Emmaus High School. His plans after graduation including attending college to study microbiology. When he is not Scouting, Walker’s interests include cross country running, camping, hiking, volunteer work at Flint Hill Farm and participating in the ski and German clubs. He is also a member of National Honor Society and German Honor Society.
