Their final 0-19 record wasn’t the focus of the season.

Instead, Catasauqua’s softball team will continue to take the necessary steps to gain back its respectability.

The once Colonial League upper-tier team recently has been boxed in the basement due to a number of factors. Catty is coming off four wins over the previous two seasons after 10-plus years of double-digit win seasons.

Enter Paige Kogelman.

A former standout in the late 2000s and a 2013 Roughie grad, Kogelman took over the program right before the start of the season and was determined to return the program to its glory days. She immediately knew it wouldn’t be an overnight process - and it hasn’t been.

“We did have a rough season,” said Kogelman. “It has been a matter of keeping their heads up and working through this.”

Despite the roadblocks, Kogelman is ready to move forward.

“I do see lots of progress,” she said. “We already have girls who have committed to the summer and the fall. We’ll have girls who are playing summer ball, and we will have some at summer workouts.

“The overall feeling around the team continues to get better. We feel like we can move this in e right direction, but the girls have to push themselves.”

Kogelman sees an old-school approach as being the key to turning the tide.

“When I played, it was about commitment,” she said. “We had trouble with that issue in recent years. The girls began to realize what they have to do, and now they have to take the next step.”

The Roughies will lose only two seniors – Hannah Towich and Haley Baez – and return two current juniors and eight current sophomores. They also will receive an influx of several anticipated freshmen that will raise their overall numbers.

Kogelman cited the play of Laura Schaffer, Natalie Ramos-Burgos, and Yesenia Ramos as being among the budding players on the team.

“Those players grew this season,” said Kogelman. “We had a number of girls who made progress and we expect them to get even better.”

Kogelman expects a number of girls to play ball during the summer as well as to participate in workouts.

The first-year coach also has her own share of experiences.

“I learned a lot and now know what to expect,” said Kogelman. “I knew I had to adapt the game as it has changed some since I grew up with it.

“I believe that I gained the respect of the umpires and other coaches, and I knew It would take some time.”

Staying the course will be the key for the program.

“Continuity will be the main issue for us,” added Kogelman. “We have to continue to develop and capitalize on situations.”
