Kern sets school record Other Roughies place at District 11 meet

After two years, Trinity Kern wanted to make a change.

Over that time, she had participated in several events, focusing primarily on the 400. But the senior knew there was more ahead.

“During my freshman and sophomore years, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do,” said Kern. “I knew I would still run the 400.

“I wanted to try the 300 hurdles and I decided to do it. My coaches said it was a good event for me, and I started to do well with it.”

Kern certainly did with a usual calm and loose approach.

She recently capped her finale season with a fifth-place finish and a new school record (50.51) at districts after being consistently among the top-five finishers throughout the season. Before districts, Kern previously topped the school record in the event (51.08) at the Colonial League meet, where she also finished fifth.

Along with Kern, Jaekwan Moodie was second in the long jump, Wilquon Clemons was third in the 300 hurdles, and Lexi Rushatz was fourth in the 3,200. Montana Muller was fifth in the pole vault, and Tory Simmons and Joseph Merkel were sixth in the javelin and 300 hurdles respectively.

“Trinity (Kern) had a great race at districts,” said head coach Kyle Rusnock. “She just missed a medal by tenths of seconds. It was a great way to end an outstanding career here at Catasauqua.

“She is a great athlete and can do just about everything. She excelled in the 300 hurdles and we were always anxious to see her compete. She was a great four-year letter winner.”

Ironically, Kern could have raised the bar even higher. She admittedly has accomplished a lot with doing a little.

“I know I could have done if I put more time into it,” Kern said. “I never really work on it (hurdles) like I should have. Most of it just came naturally to me.”

In addition to her track accolades, Kern has been involved with competitive and travel cheerleading for the last 11 years, and she also played soccer for the Roughies. She once believed softball might have been her future sport.

“Cheerleading has really helped me with hurdles,” she said. “My flexibility was very good and it made it easy to do hurdles. It’s really how I got into track.

“My dad tried to get me to play T-ball, but I didn’t like it. If I did, I would have probably played softball.”

Kern plans to attend Moravian College in the fall and begin a pre-dental major. The energetic Kern likely will maintain her sense of humor.

“I decided to go into that field years ago,” she said. “I had thought about possibly going into nursing, but I don’t deal with blood that well. I would probably pass out with the sight of a lot of blood.”

With fate seemingly on her side and a lighter side of life, there shouldn’t too many high hurdles in the future.
