Hanover council looking for updates from Rockefeller group

Rockefeller Development Group had a line in Hanover Township Council’s agenda April 17 to provide updated information regarding the Race Street improvements.

Township Manager Christopher Garges reported that Rockefeller had not received a formal notice to proceed from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The developer is working on controlling traffic along Race Street with portions of the road at varying heights. The next phase of the construction project is to begin work on Airport Road.

Garges is looking for an update at the May 17 meeting.

In other business, a neighbor queried Garges on the status of 710 Lloyd St. The property was used as a freight-forwarding company and stored fuels. The companies involved moved to other quarters. There is a request for a zoning variance to allow the property to be used for holding mobile storage containers.

The request to make the zoning change was scheduled for April 25.

In a major move, council passed an ordinance to rezone property along Willowbrook Road to Planned Industrial Office (PIO). The existing classification is either residential or commercial. Commercial designation would allow for warehouses similar to the businesses that line Race Street now. PIO gives the township an option to push for office space along Willowbrook Road.

As part of the agreement between Rockefeller and the township at the start of the FedEx Ground warehouse project, Rockefeller promised to work with the township to develop the property for commercial projects. Rezoning the land is part of the township’s commitment to the development effort.

In another action, council tabled a measure to establish parameters for allocation of wastewater and associated fees. The township can sell capacity to other municipalities and the new ordinance would set up the parameters.

The measure was tabled because Hanover has received a request from Allen Township for wastewater capacity. Council agreed with Solicitor Jackson Eaton that the ordinance can wait until the parameters of the Allen Township agreement could be reviewed.

Council agreed to designate May 2 as State Police Day in the township. The beginning of May is Founders Day for the Pennsylvania State Police.

“We are grateful for the support we receive from the state police. We have a good working relationship with them,” Chairman Bruce Paulus said.
