Front St. improvement bids are released
Catasauqua Borough Engineer Ronald Gawlik reported April 29 his office has released bids for streetscape improvements on Front Street. The improvements are part of the rejuvenation of Front Street in line with the Iron Works project.
After council’s workshop that night, council members met in executive session to review a presentation on the sales agreement for the Iron Works project. The final agreement is expected to be on the agenda for a vote at the regular meeting May 6.
Also at the May 6 meeting, council will vote on a change in a borough rule that requires the borough manager to be a resident of Catasauqua. The measure would eliminate the residency requirement.
Solicitor Thomas Dinkelacker anticipates that all the bylaws will soon be complete for the George Taylor House Association, which is a registered nonprofit.
Councilman Brian McKittrick asked for Catasauqua Area School District to move forward with council’s request regarding a School Resource Officer (SRO). Based on a good-faith agreement, the borough police department placed an officer at the high school, which is located in East Allen Township. The SRO needs to contact state police for infractions until an agreement is signed with the borough.
According to Mc- Kittrick, school district officials indicated they will be discussing the measure at a closed session after the next school district meeting.
Councilwoman Jessica Kroope has a summer activity schedule in the early planning stages for tweens. The programs include coding, mural arts and gardening. The programs are instructor-led. More details will be released over the next few weeks.
Owners of Catty Corner Neighborhood Pub & Pie wanted to celebrate the restaurant’s grand opening June 22 with a block gala on Mulberry Street. Residents signed a petition asking that the street not be blocked off, citing parking problems.
Borough Manager Stephen Travers said he will try to work out an accommodation. Police Chief Douglas Kish noted parking is going to be a concern and asked that guest parking be considered in negotiations with the owners.
Upcoming events in the borough include a yard sale May 18 at Fireman’s Field, Second and Race streets, to benefit the K-9 fund. A Main Streets meeting is scheduled for May 16 at Tony’s Top Cat, 607 Front St.
