CHS looks to end strong
Catasauqua’s baseball team’s record of 4-9 through Monday’s play easily could have been closed to being reversed.
It’s all about how they have attrition and endurance.
“We just don’t have enough depth, and we have trouble finishing games,” deadpanned head coach Steve Bradley. “That’s what has really hurt us this season.
“We have been in our share of games. We have been making mistakes in games and it always seems to be in the last couple of innings.”
The Roughies began the week saddled with a four-game losing streak. In their last three defeats, Catty was beaten respectively in the sixth-, seventh-, and sixth-inning.
“We’re playing against a good team like Palisades (trailing 4-3 at the time) and we give up four runs in the bottom of the sixth,” added Bradley. “We had a 4-1 lead against Palmerton and they came back to tie it at 5-5 (lost 8-5). We couldn’t hold them down from there.
“We are playing good baseball for five or six innings. We’re one or two pitchers away from being a team with a winning record. Our record could flip with some depth.”
Junior Andrew Torres has a hard-luck, 2-5 record with a 3.08 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 36.1 innings.
“He (Torres) has done a really good job,” said Bradley. “We just haven’t been able to end games for him. He has kept us in every game, but we have had to take him out because of pitch counts.”
Bradley is positive about the return of junior pitcher Jacob Drummer, who is gradually returning from an injury and whose innings are still limited. Freshman Brandon Jenny overall has been a pleasant surprise, but he is learning on the job. Senior Jason Schneck, a natural second baseman, had done an admirable job as a starter.
Offensively, sophomore catcher Cole Schiffer has taken charge behind the plate and with his bat (.371), and junior Bailey Witt has emerged as an offensive threat (.419).
“Cole (Schiffer) has been tearing it up” stated Bradley. “He (Schiffer) has hit for us all season. Bailey Witt came back to us and he has been a big surprise. He is playing with confidence and having a solid year.”
Bradley is confident fate will reverse its course over the final seven games.
“Against Palisades, we had nine kids because of injuries,” said the veteran skipper. “These kids have been competitive in every game. It’s like we have a five-gallon tank and we only have four gallons in it. That’s what it has been like.
“This is a good group to coach and they love baseball. It does bother them when they lose. We have a lot of young players and we should have a good future.”
