Playoff chances coming down to wire
Freedom’s boys lacrosse team will be fighting for their playoff lives with only days left in the regular season.
The Patriots came into the week at 5-8 overall needing wins to solidify a spot, as they take on Saucon Valley (6-5), Northwestern (14-6) and Parkland (14-0) this week.
Getting to the .500 mark would be crucial for the Pates chances, but that may be slim, considering Thursday’s affair comes against Parkland, who has had its way with each of their opponents this season.
Freedom closes out the season next Monday against Liberty (2-11) if they don’t qualify for the District 11 race.
The Hurricanes (2-11) knocked off Bethlehem Catholic last week 14-11 to register their second win of the season over the Hawks this year. Liberty has contests against Pleasant Valley (3-11) and Northampton (4-11) this week with an opportunity to string together some wins before next week’s rivalry showdown.
Bethlehem Catholic (0-10) closes out the regular season with Nazareth, Pleasant Valley and Central Catholic.
On the girls side, Freedom (10-3) dropped a 20-12 affair to Easton last week, marking their second loss this season to their division nemesis. The victory pushed the Rovers (9-3) to the top of the EPC and District 11 3A rankings.
The Pates now have Southern Lehigh (9-1), Northwestern (0-10), Liberty (7-8) and Moravian (3-6) to finish the season.
Liberty’s playoff push will come down to the wire, as they have Easton, Freedom and Northampton (1-13) left. With the ‘Canes likely needing to finish .500 to qualify, they’ll need to go 2-1 in their final three games.
That means they’ll either need to pull off an upset against Easton or Freedom. The Rovers handled Liberty last time 20-5, but the Pates and Hurricanes went down to the wire in their initial affair this season, with Liberty scoring a 9-8 victory.
