Hawks hope to continue progress
Bethlehem Catholic’s softball team has experienced an up-and-down season thus far, but the Hawks hope to level things out as they prepare to face their Steel Division opponents for the second time this season.
“We’re struggling a little bit, but we’re playing better,” said Becahi coach Rich Mazza. “Kids are doing what we thought maybe they could do at the beginning of the year and it wasn’t happening. Now they’re starting to do it. We were hitting fly balls and now we’re hitting the line drives and doing much better.”
Last Tuesday, Becahi defeated East Stroudsburg South, 13-0, but the Hawks agree it was a game against Notre Dame East Stroudsburg that was a turning point in their season.
“We started off a little rocky, but we’ve made a lot of progress and we’re hitting our stride, and we can only go up from here,” said Becahi outfielder Jaden Spigner. “Last week I feel like we really started. We played Notre Dame East Stroudsburg and we were hitting a lot better and our fielding was good and we’re starting to gel better.”
In the Hawks’ game against East Stroudsburg South, Spigner hit two home runs, one to left field and one to center.
“The first pitch was high and inside so that’s kind of where I took it and I feel like it was a higher, over-the-fence home run,” she said. “The second one was right down the middle so I just took it. It was a good feeling to know we’re all making contact and getting around the bases and scoring.”
Becahi third baseman Addie Roche also had a home run for the Hawks in the third inning.
“The first pitch looked really good so I was kind of scared at that point, but then I saw a nice pitch come in and I just kept my shoulders in and line drive over the fence,” said Roche. “I think when Shylynn Cordero came up and had a nice hit, I think we all just followed and it kept carrying on from there.”
Roche had 3 RBIs and Spigner had 5 RBIs against the Cavaliers. Emma Bond was the winning pitcher.
“My screwball was definitely working. My curveball hit the outside corner but I don’t feel like it was breaking that much, so just a couple things I have to fix up for the rest of the week,” said Bond, a freshman.
Becahi catcher Teighan Boyle is also a freshman.
“This is our third year together [since seventh grade],” Bond said. “I feel pretty comfortable with her behind the plate, and I know she has my back.”
This week, the Hawks will host Liberty on Wednesday.
“It’s been a little rough the first half [of the season], but I give credit to our pitchers,” said Roche. “I think now will be our turning point where we’ll push through games and pull out some wins.”
