Zephs shine at Zephyr Relays
Whitehall’s depth in the sprints and middle distance relays was on display at the Zephyr Relays, claiming a number of first-place finishes with a mixture of younger runners and established vets.
The Zephyr Relays, now in its 12th year, brought together 11 teams from both the Colonial League and Eastern Pennsylvania Conference on April 13.
The Zephyr girls had an outstanding meet in the sprints and middle distance relays. They were first in the 4x100, the 4x200, and the 4x800. They also won the “tanker race,” an event in which the throwers compete in a running event, with the foursome of Autumn Dragovits, Toni Jones, Elissar Khalil and Delaney Sullivan winning the 4x100 yard relay in 56.44.
In the 4x100 meters, the Zephs went with a different lineup featuring Kate Bonshak, Helen Davis, Aliyah Barkley and Aspen Schache and won the race, finishing in 50.51.
That was also true in the 4x200 as they captured another first, crossing the line in 1:47.66.
They kept up their dominance in the running relays, this time topping the field in the 4x800 with a 10:07.53 mark.
The boys also took first in the 4x100. They also needed to shuffle their lineup in that race, but that didn’t disrupt their cohesiveness and they motored to victory in 44.67.
The girls finished fourth with 73 points, while the boys were fifth with 77. Palisades’ girls won the Zephyr Relays with 119 points, while Stroudsburg topped the boys with 80.50 points.
Head coach Tyler Miller said that the meet was a chance to have some fun while competing, incorporating events such as the tanker races for both the boys and the girls to enjoy.
It also allowed them to get some younger athletes a chance to get some experience, and in the process build up a résumé that could prove beneficial for a postseason berth.
“It was impressive to see what they did,” said Miller.
One thing that’s been impressive all year has been the boys and girls 4x100 relay teams. The girls currently hold the EPC’s best time in that race with a 50.6 mark.
Even with the success both teams have had this year, Miller admits it’s not a finished product. He said that they’re still playing around with their lineups, and with four more meets scheduled before the postseason, he hopes that will all shake out one they take the oval in the EPC Championships.
Also finishing first at the Relays was Allen Negrete in the long jump with a 19-08.50 mark.
Lucas Souders was first in the javelin with a 171-07 toss.
Izak Bright finished third in the discus at 126-02, while Javal Reyes was fourth in the shot put (41-11), and Marcus Hamscher was also fourth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 11-06.
For the girls, Dragovits was second in the javelin with a 103-09 mark, while Jones was fourth in the discus at 93-01.50.
Miller said that it was a good overall day for Whitehall. They were once again solid in the throws, something that’s been a staple for them all season.
“It’s nice to see the consistency we have there,” said Miller. “We’ve consistently performed well all season in the throws.”
