Schlofer will do whatever is asked to help Roughs
For Mason Schlofer, it was all about keeping it straight.
His shoulder, that is.
The Catasauqua junior needed to make some tweaks to his hitting this spring, and his stance was a big part of it. Even though Schlofer is hitting .233 through 11 games, he has been pleased with his progress.
“I have been hitting the ball better,” said Schlofer. “I knew that I had to improve my stance. It was about keeping my shoulder straight. I was dropping it (shoulder).
“Now, I am seeing the ball better and I have more confidence overall.”
Along with making better contact, Schlofer has become the Roughies’ jack-of-all-trades in the field. He can, and has, played first base, second base, third base, right field and left field.
His personal preference is first base, where he has spent most of his time this season.
“I played first base a couple of times and I enjoyed it,” he said. “But I will play wherever they want me to play. I know I can play more than a few positions and be pretty comfortable out there. It is a strong part of my game that I am able to play a number of positions.”
Head coach Steve Bradley is confident with Schlofer’s flexibility.
“He (Schlofer) can help us at a number of positions,” said Bradley. “We feel good about putting him at a number of positions. He has the ability to do well. Mason is the type of kid who will do anything that we can ask of him.
“He is the type of person that every team needs out there.”
Schlofer began playing organized baseball at the age of five and it has been a love affair ever since. He has been inspired and motivated by his parents, Mike and Linda, and older sister, Olivia, a 2016 Catty grad who was a softball and field hockey player.
He is a member of Varsity C along with student council, and has been his class treasurer since his freshman year. When he is toiling with baseball, Schlofer can be found boating and wakeboarding during the summer.
Despite his team’s 4-7 record through Tuesday’s play, Schlofer believes the Roughies can make it a meaningful second half of the season.
“I think we’re still at a good spot,” he said. “We have been scoring more runs and our fielding has been a big part of our game lately. We have a good chemistry and we can be better.”
