Soggy start to boroughs’ cleanup efforts

Catasauqua and North Catasauqua boroughs had great plans to hit the D&L trail for a cleanup April 20 as part of Earth Day.

Catasauqua has had an ongoing ritual to clean up the canal area and the D&L trail for years, and the effort this year was coordinated with North Catasauqua. The two boroughs are working closely together to complete the unfinished section on the D&L trail as part of THE LINK Trail Network. Once complete, the trail will give hikers and bike riders unimpeded access from White Haven to Philadelphia, a 163-mile span along the Lehigh River.

Plans to meet at sunrise were thwarted by substantial rainfall. Catasauqua Main Streets posted on Facebook that it would be rescheduling cleanup in the borough’s downtown but encouraged volunteers to continue to check for updates should the weather clear.

As the rain slowed, the cleanup was rescheduled for noon.

The cleanup is not all work. In North Catasauqua, Pizza Doro gave participants a coupon for $5 off pizza. On the Catasauqua side, Catty Beverage had hot dogs, snacks and drinks waiting for the volunteer teams.
