LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

LHS girls making strides

Momentum can be a powerful force in sports and Liberty’s girls’ lacrosse team is riding the wave heading into this week.

The Hurricanes (5-5) were winners of three-straight entering the remaining week’s action and are keeping themselves near the .500 mark as the season winds toward the midpoint.

Head coach Laurie Ann Muller saw some of the steps toward progress in the beginning of the season, especially after an early win over Nazareth.

“Beating Nazareth was a huge step in the right direction for our program,” said Muller. “It gave the girls confidence leading into our game against Freedom, which ended in an overtime loss. We definitely have our sights set on making districts.”

The Hurricanes last two wins have come against Northampton and Quakertown, two perennial struggling programs, but it shows that the Hurricanes are now moving into a tier where they are expected to win games against lesser opponents.

This week the ‘Canes squared off against Central Catholic, a 13-11 win in which Brooke Veit scored four goals and Ava Askerneese and McKenna Burkhardt added three each.

Parkland and Delaware Valley are contests that could show how far they’ve come and how far they still have to go.

“We need to play extremely well over the next couple weeks to pick up the wins we need to be at least .500,” Muller said. “I feel we are on track to make this happen. The girls are really coming together and all supporting each other.”

Freedom (8-1) has ripped off six-straight wins since their loss to Easton on March 28 and are at the top of the district power rankings, but still a game behind Easton in the East Penn Conference lead.

The Pates have a tough week ahead with Parkland, Emmaus and Saucon Valley on the docket, as they look to maintain their status at the top of the conference.
