Passive park planned

South Whitehall is planning a passive, low-impact park on a hillside along Brickyard Road near the reservoir.

During the March 20 commissioners’ meeting, Director of Township Operations Randy Cope commented on the site.

“It will be on a steep, wooded hillside with beautiful views, abundant wildlife, and a natural meadow,” Cope said.

He reported the park will be named Kohler Ridge at the request of the Kohler family from whom 16 acres were purchased last October.

The Kohler property adjoins 10 acres obtained as open space from the Hills at Winchester development.

Cope noted the township is seeking $148,149 from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as partial reimbursement for the Kohler land acquisition.

He is also applying for a community planning grant to support an effort to develop a master plan for the park.

Cope stated the Kohler Ridge master plan would focus on the background and history of the land, public participation, resource analysis and design alternatives.

The plan would also identify passive recreation opportunities and sustainability and green design considerations.

“We want to keep it nature driven with scenic viewing areas,” Cope said. “Our goal is to be low impact.”

He noted the land is public property but is not yet readily accessible.

In other matters, Cope reported the Jordan Greenway from Wehr Mill Road to Route 309 is under construction with a ribbon cutting planned for fall 2019.

He also noted Public Works Manager Jeff Clapper resigned recently.

Cope said the work of the department is being done by Assistant Public Works Manager Jerry Charvala, general services group leader Herb Bender, and himself.

“Between the three of us, we’re keeping the ship afloat,” Cope said. “We’re going to evaluate the current situation and determine what the needs of the department are.”
