LHS gets 7th victory
Liberty’s boys’ tennis team picked up its seventh win with a victory over Pleasant Valley last week.
Hurricane coach Chris Conrad noted the match of the day was played by one singles player Louis Gruber, who came back from a 0-4 third set deficit to win his match.
Earlier in the season, Gruber had come back from dropping his first set, 1-6, in Liberty’s match against Nazareth.
“The very first match we played, at Nazareth, I played Gabe [Knowles]. He’s really consistent, gets a lot of balls in play, and so that took three sets,” Gruber said. “After the first set, I just told myself to start the match over and stay calm because he and the entire Nazareth team were getting pretty pumped up, so I told myself, just focus on your own game, and don’t show any emotion, good or bad, and ride the momentum with each game you get.”
Gruber won the second set, 6-2, and the third set, 6-3.
“It took almost three hours, and that was a very physical match, especially in the cold and the wind. It took a lot of energy out of me, but it was a nice confidence booster going forward for the rest of this season, knowing that I could go the distance like that and be comfortable with it,” said Gruber.
David Lynn also played a close match at two singles and won, 6-4, 7-5.
Jacob Wong lost his match at three singles, 4-6, 1-6. Wong was a doubles player last year.
Anthony Ronca and Wyatt Marshall won at two doubles, 6-2, 6-3, Shayaan Farhad and Gavin Evans-Gartley won at three doubles, 6-4, 6-0, and at four doubles, Aidan Evans-Gartley and Raj Kundu also won their match, 6-1, 6-1.
The Hurricanes have also defeated Emmaus, Whitehall, East Stroudsburg North, Pocono Mountain East, and Stroudsburg.
“I think all of us, as a team, have been pleasantly surprised by how it’s been going,” said Gruber. “We’ve added a lot of depth to our second and third doubles this year. It’s nice because we’re all pushing each other in practice and we’re all getting better as a team each time.”
