Lacrosse teams still looking for first win
The Northampton girls lacrosse team is still searching for its first win of the season following a 20-4 loss to Freedom Saturday morning.
The Kids has reason to be optimistic entering the game coming off a narrow, 9-7 loss to Moravian Academy on Thursday.
The Patriots scored first, three minutes into the game. One minute later Gillian Rogerson tallied the equalizer.
Northampton was a player short on a yellow card when Freedom regained the lead at the 18:28 mark of the first half. Two minutes later Eliza Rogerson was robbed when her shot hit the post.
The Patriots scored the next three goals before Eliza Rogerson’s next shot found the back of the net to make the score 5-2 with 8 minutes left in the half.
But, Freedom scored the next four goals and Northampton hit another post on the way to a 9-2 margin at the halftime break.
The Patriots scored the first five goals of the second half to put the game out of reach.
Eliza Rogerson and Laura Filchner added second half goals for the Kids. Gabi Mercado registered nine saves in goal. Laura Tucker had a couple of breathtaking end-to-end dashes with the ball that showed off her athleticism, but neither led to a goal.
Northampton struggled to gain possession on the draw which allowed Freedom to generate far more scoring chances.
Head coach Paige Hoffman stressed that developing her young roster is more important than the results at this point.
“Every coach, every team cares about wins and losses, but at the end of the year we’re looking at how the players have developed as individuals and as a team,” she said. “We’re a young team. We graduated 15 seniors last year so we’re looking to rebuild our roster. The freshman coming in have had lacrosse experience which is really exciting.”
A winnable game at Northwestern Lehigh on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. is sandwiched between two tough games, at home against Parkland on Thursday and at Freedom on Tuesday.
The boys team is also looking for their first win after an 0-4 start to the season. A pair of eight-goal losses to Saucon Valley and Freedom have been the best results to this point in the early part of the season.
The boys will have a chance to pick up that elusive win on at home on Friday when they take on a Liberty team that is also trying to break into the win column.
A Saturday morning home game against a powerful Emmaus team is a tough ask, but their Tuesday home game with Bethlehem Catholic seems like another opportunity to get a win.
