Catasauqua head baseball coach Steve Bradley sees plenty of inexperience with his current squad.

He also sees plenty of potential.

So, on any given day, there can be a mixture of satisfaction and frustration.

Such was the case in the Roughies’ latest game in a 10-8 loss at Pen Argyl Monday.

“We didn’t execute enough in the game and we didn’t make enough plays,” said Bradley about his loss to Pen Argyl. “We didn’t hit until late in the game. We have to do a better job at the plate.”

The Roughies (1-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first until Pen Argyl tied it in the bottom off starter Adam Reinhart.

Pen Argyl then added a run in the second and had a five-run outburst in the third to stake themselves to a 9-3 advantage. The lead reached 10-3 until the Roughies rallied with five in the seventh, falling a pair of runs short to tie it.

Ty Reitz and Derek Troxell each had a pair of hits, and Cole Schiffer and Bailey Witt each plated a pair of runs.

Reinhart worked the first two innings before giving way to Jason Schneck, who pitched through the fifth. Brandon Jenny took the sixth inning for the Roughies.

“I thought Reinhart and Schneck did a good job for us,” added Bradley. “They both are infielders out there on the mound. Jenny is a freshman who is learning every time he goes to the mound.”

Two days earlier, the Roughies lost another heartbreaker when they dropped a 2-0 decision at Palmerton.

Junior Andrew Torres threw a complete game, nine-strikeout performance. The Roughies managed two hits, and Torres scattered five.

“That was a tough one,” said Bradley. “We just couldn’t string enough hits together to score. Andrew (Torres) pitched a great game for us. He is really throwing the ball well for us.”

The Roughies picked up their first win of the season with a convincing, 12-3 win over Salisbury March 27 in which they posted all 12 runs after three innings.

Schneck knocked in four runs and Andrew Martinez added three. Troxell had a pair of hits.

Reinhart and Schneck combined to throw the first five innings. Jenny again closed out the game.

“We did a nice job against Salisbury,” said Bradley. “We hit the ball well, and our pitching was solid. We did manage to string our hits together.”

The Roughies will have a key game against Southern Lehigh Friday and then have a quick turnaround against Wilson Saturday. Bradley stated Torres will throw on either day.

“Southern Lehigh is a big game for us,” said Bradley. “We’re still a young team in many ways. We have to cut down on our errors and mistakes.”
