Catasauqua’s boys’ track team picked up a victory in the opening tri-meet with Northwestern and Northern Lehigh, but both Roughies’ teams took another important step.

The Roughies have develop depth to fill some open spots in the past, and they also are able to field more than one team in specific events.

“The boys had a nice win, and the girls looked good as well,” said head coach Kyle Rusnock. “The kids are working hard and competing at every level.

“Everyone is really competing. We have had run-offs in our races and our throws. We have been able to have two relay teams in some races. It really has developed into a nice situation for us.”

Rusnock noted how his team had an impressive showing against Northern Lehigh and battled with Northwestern in the tri-meet.

“We pretty much dominated Northern Lehigh,” said Rusnock. “We won a number of individual events and our relay teams won. Northwestern is a tough team, but we competed.”

Wilquon Clemons won the overall 300 hurdles, and he also took the top spot in the 100 against Northern Lehigh and was second overall in that race.

Joe Merkle won the long jump and triple jump against Northern Lehigh and finished second overall in both events.

“Wilquon (Clemons) come out firing, and he had a better feeling for everything after being out last year,” said Rusnock. “I am really looking forward to seeing what he can do this year.”

Lexi Rushatz was the overall winner in the girls’ 400. Trinity Kern won the 300 hurdles against Northern Lehigh and she was second overall.

The Roughie boys’ and girls’ 4 x 100, 4 x 400, and 4 x 800 teams defeated Northern Lehigh and finished second overall. Matt Smith had a productive day as he was third overall in the 800 and 1,600, and Cole Brown was third overall in the 400. Jaekwan Moodie was third overall in the long jump.

“Our relay teams looked very good,” said Rusnock. “The girls lost (Kenzie) Bradley and (Tyra) Brown off the team from last year.”

Catty had a busy schedule this week with meets against Salisbury Thursday and Saucon Valley Tuesday. Rusnock expected to have a number of upperclassmen out of the lineup due to a Varsity C trip Thursday.

“We’re at a good point right now,” added Rusnock. “We are very competitive and we have the opportunity to accomplish a lot of things.”
