Boroughs organize joint river cleanup April 20
North Catasauqua and Catasauqua will join forces April 20 to clean up the boroughs, in observance of Earth Day.
North Catasauqua Borough Council President Peter Paone said at the March 18 meeting of council that focus will be on the area of the Lehigh Canal. Area Boy Scout troops, emergency management personnel and resident volunteers will tackle the work.
This joint river cleanup will be held 9 a.m. to noon. Crews will start at either end of the boroughs and meet in the middle.
Those planning to volunteer are asked to meet at the D&L trailhead in North Catasauqua, adjacent to the public works building at 1460 Main St., or at Biery’s Port Coal Yard in Catasauqua. Supplies will be provided.
In other business at the meeting, Paone said the summer internship program is progressing.
In February, the borough approved a request from Lafayette College and Workforce Board of the Lehigh Valley regarding internship opportunities for young adults this summer.
Lafayette College has posted its internship opportunity already, seeking clerical and engineering positions for students who want professional experience before entering the real world. This would be an eight-week, part-time program.
This position would benefit the borough office. Council agreed at the February meeting that the eligible student be paid $10 an hour for eight weeks from the budget for clerical work. An individual will be appointed to supervise the student and delegate his or her daily duties.
A representative from Workforce Board of the Lehigh Valley will come to the borough to validate the possibility of a position. The group is looking to place teens and young adults ages 16 to 24 in positions ranging from lawn mowing to clerical assistance. Workforce would pay the interns to work for the borough at $100 a week per intern. As soon as the position is validated, it will be posted and interviews conducted.
Council members met in an executive session March 18 and decided to advertise again for the borough secretary position now held by Nancy Knecht, Paone said.
Knecht plans to retire during the summer.
