Young Roughs ready to start the season

On the surface, Catasauqua’s baseball team will enter the season with an inexperienced squad with little depth.

How the Roughies develop from there, however, can determine their season.

“We’re young,” said head coach Steve Bradley. “We don’t have a lot of numbers, but we have young players who have promise.

“We’ll see in about a month how we can move forward as a team.”

Andrew Martinez, Jason Schneck, and Bradshaw Henning are the lone seniors from a 6-14 team a year ago.

Martinez and Schneck figure to be fixtures in the infield, and Henning should find a spot.

On the mound, juniors Andrew Torres and Jake Drummer are expected to set the pace. Drummer should return to the lineup roughly within a month due to surgery. Sophomore Ty Reitz also is expected to return soon.

When they are not pitching, Torres and Drummer will see time in the infield.

“We’ll have Torres and Drummer at the top,” said Bradley. “They both got a lot of experience last year, and we expect both of them to have big years for us. They both can log a lot of innings for us.”

Bradley also expects freshmen Brandon Jenny and Wesley Fotta also to register some innings.

“(Jenny) has looked good,” said Bradley. “Fotta has a good arm, good glove, and swings the bat well.”

Junior Adam Reinhart will open at third, but he can also pitch, play first and the outfield.

Fellow junior Bailey Witt also has a steady bat. Junior Mason Schlofer should be back at first base.

Sophomore Derek Troxell has looked good and will be a constant in center field.

Bradley has 13 players on the varsity roster, and he has six players on the JV team. He anticipates having some JV games this spring.

The Roughies had their usual opener against Northampton on March 22 pushed back because of heavy rain. Still, Bradley is optimistic his team can see some action outside over the next two weeks.

“It will be difficult for us to get on the field soon,” said Bradley. “We’ll probably bring Liberty over to throw some batting practice and have the kids see another team.

“We’ll keep working and see what happens.”
