Track aims to continue to build foundation
It likely will take some time before Catasauqua head track coach Kyle Rusnock sees his full contributions from his team this spring.
Rusnock lost a number of key contributors from last year’s squad, and he has watched a core of returning letter winners and promising newcomers combine to form the new transition.
“So far, things have been going pretty well,” said the ever-optimistic Rusnock. “We have a number of kids out and we have more of a foundation than last year. We have around 60-70 kids at practices and we have a number of freshmen who joined us this year.”
On the girls’ side, Amy Huber and Hamyah Jenkins are back from their winning 4x100 relay team from the past two seasons.
Other girls expected to compete in running and sprinting events are Madison Hicks, Taylor Hicks, Aidan Gerhard, Trisha Bloszinsky, Sydney Gebhardt and Kyra Jackson.
Lexi Rushatz, a former state qualifier, and Lucy Brubaker will be distance runners. Montana Muller will compete in the pole vault, and Tory Simmons is back for the field events.
“We have a lot of cross country runners who came out,” added Rusnock. “This will help keep them in shape for the fall. We have a lot of young runners who have been looking good, and Amy Huber, a senior, is a good all-around athlete.
“The girls were very competitive and were in all the meets last year.”
On the boys’ side, seniors Wilquon Clemons and Dainte Kaintz are back in the sprints. Cole Brown also figures to play a prominent role with the sprints as could Jaekwan Moody and Joe Merkle.
Seniors Sebastian Henry and Brandon Norton will participate in the short and long distance events, and the duo will be counted on for their leadership.
“Both of them can make some noise,” said Rusnock. “Both of them will do anything to help the program. They do what they can, and both of them are ready to reach out to anyone on the team.”
