Catty enjoys Celtic music, food
Gas House Dance Hall, 311 Front St., Catasauqua, hosted a Celtic festival March 10 featuring Irish songs by local band Celtic Adventure.
“It’s something we wanted to try,” said Vicki Bartholomew, who manages Gas House Dance Hall and the adjacent coffeehouse, Blockers. “This year, we did it on a Sunday, but I think it’s better to have it on Saturday. We wanted to do it before St. Patrick’s Day, so we would not conflict with other parties.”
The party featured Dave Jones with his Uilleann bagpipes.
“They aren’t the normal type you see. The ones with the three pipes are Scottish pipes; these are Irish pipes,” he said.
Uilleann means “of the elbow.” The pipes are inflated with a bellows strapped to the player’s side and played by adjusting the air with the right elbow. The Irish pipes offer a greater range of notes and have a distinctive tone.
Celtic Adventure is composed of three local musicians: Al Wallitsch, Gene Kutzler and Catasauqua Police Chief Douglas Kish.
“It’s something we do to relax. We enjoy the music and the fun that goes with some of the traditional songs,” Kish said.
A singalong had the audience rocking to the lyrics “My father made me marry Mary Mack, and we’ll all be merry when I marry Mary Mack.”
Honorary leprechauns for the evening were Gia and Anna Gianiri.
Rebecca Grube provided a buffet with corned beef and cabbage sliders, sausage and peppers, shepherd’s pie and parsley potatoes. Guinness-style cupcakes were on the menu for dessert.
Beer for the evening was provided by Taylor House Brewing Company.
Everything was included in the cost of admission.
