Six advance to states

Fresh off a dominating performance at the previous weekend’s District XI championships, the Konkrete Kids’ wrestlers took to the mats at the PIAA AAA NE Regional Championships looking to punch their tickets to the state championship in Hershey.

As a team, Northampton finished tied for second with Nazareth, two-and-half points behind Bethlehem Catholic.

The Kids will be sending six wrestlers to compete in the state finals.

Julian Chlebove won his third regional title and was Northampton’s sole champion. Due to the vagaries of the PA seeding system, Chlebove’s path to his third state title will intersect with North Hills’ junior Sam Hillegas in the state 132-pound semifinal. Hillegas is 144-1 in his career and is also looking for his third state title.

Devon Britton will have a shot to better his third-place state finish last year. Britton made the 138-pound final but was held out due to a lingering rib injury.

Seth Lisa explained the decision.

“He was banged up, limited practice all week. We wanted to see if he could do enough to qualify and try to get his body a little more time to rest. We might have sacrificed some points for the team, but it was the right call for his individual postseason.”

Jagger Condomitti continued his rivalry with Beca’s Ryan Anderson in the 145-pound final. Condomitti evened the bout at 4-4 with a bang-bang escape and takedown with 22 seconds left in the bout. Anderson was able to pull off the escape on a restart with 16 seconds left.

Mikey Kistler bounced back from a 6-4 loss in the semis to earn a major decision in the consolation to secure his ticket back to Hershey. He came back from 4-0 down to beat Jake Dressler of Nazareth for third place.

Jayden Bortz bounced back from being pinned by an unsportsmanlike Jameel Coles of Northeast HS in the semifinals to win his next two bouts to capture third and earn his first trip to states. Liberty’s Damen Moyer became an honorary Konkrete Kid by beating the preening Coles in the 195-pound final and giving him his first loss of the season.

Ryan Stilgenbauer battled back from a quarterfinal overtime loss to claim fourth place at 106 and a coveted trip to Hershey in his senior year.

Stilgenbauer reflected on what the accomplishment means to him.

“Last night after I lost in the quarters I realized if I lose another time this could be it,” he said. “It would mean a lot (to earn a podium finish in Hershey). It would be crazy. Last year, not even making it to the second day of districts and this year getting a chance to stand on the podium at states. It would be a dream come true.”

The Kids had four wrestlers finish in fifth place, one spot out of earning a place in the state tournament.

Sam Hanley dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision in his consolation semifinal on a third period reversal. Hanley had led District XI champion Cam Enriquez 7-4 in the championship semi before losing 13-9.

Ethan Szerencsits was unable to secure a third period escape starting from the bottom and fell in his consolation semifinal 3-2. He did avenge his 3-1 quarterfinal loss to Dillon Murphy of Beca in the fifth place consolation.

Blake Lambert made it to championship semifinal, where he went down to District XI champion Nick Nittoli of Bangor. He was unable to overcome Stephen Schott of Nazareth to earn a spot in Hershey.

Bubba Werkheiser logged some serious mat time on Saturday. He made it to the ultimate tiebreak against eventual champion Sami Khamis in the semis. He then went to TB2 against Jase Crouse of Beca in the consolation semis. He prevailed in the UTB in his fifth place bout.

The AAA state tournament starts Thursday 4 p.m. at the Giant Center in Hershey and runs through Saturday night when the final session begins at 7 p.m. The broadcast rights are held by flowrestling.com. A subscription is required.
