Community joins cause

Slovak Center Social Club, North Catasauqua, held a cash bingo and basket raffle fundraiser March 2 for Dave Kline, from Kline’s Auto Service Center, 806 Race St., Catasauqua.

Kline is battling cancer and needed help to cover health care expenses. His friends turned out to support him. Ruthi Stanley, who is the steward at the center, said the crowd reached the maximum 100-person seating capacity.

Business owners in the auto industry supported the effort. Local sponsors included Force 1, Biery’s Port Bodyworks and Ringers Automotive for starters. Egypt Bakery, Ackroyd’s Hardware, Catty Beverage and Relic Hunter Firing Line also made contributions. Faust Construction donated the door prizes.

“This event fits right into our mission,” Stanley said. “Our goal is to better the community. We host the Lions and the volunteer fire department. The center has a steady following and provides a full-service bar and can provide food.

“We do catering for Brubaker and Schisler funeral homes,” she said.

Everyone chipped in to guarantee a good turnout. Laurie Ryden and Bernadette Frable brought in the highest ticket sales. Most of the people who attended were first-time bingo players. The club picked up a few extra dollars selling daubers.

Kris McDonnell brought along his Pirates softball team. McDonnell and Kline are longtime friends.
