SangriaFest coming to Upper Macungie
If all goes well, ArtsQuest SangriaFest will be coming to Upper Macungie Township’s Grange Park in addition to the yearly event at SteelStacks, Bethlehem.
ArtsQuest Chief Operating Officer Curt Mosel attended the Upper Macungie supervisors’ Feb. 7 meeting to give them an overview of the project.
Board members then had a lengthy discussion on his request.
The vote was 2-1 in favor of allowing ArtsQuest to set up at the park. Supervisor Jim Brunell was the lone “no” vote.
Concern centered around allowing alcohol in the park. Currently, no alcohol is allowed for any events or parties.
ArtsQuest, in Bethlehem sponsors numerous events throughout the year at SteelStacks - most notably Musikfest.
Mosel said they have noticed not many people from the western part of Lehigh County area attend the function.
Therefore, their thought is to find a place in the western area to have an occasion and Upper Macungie’s Grange Park fills the bill. The vote was contingent upon all aspects of the event being approved by the township.
ArtsQuest Senior Director of Communications Mark Demko said in a telephone interview Feb. 25 with The Press that the Upper Macungie SangriaFest will be in June, a month before the July 13 event in Bethlehem.
In other matters, a public hearing was held before the regular meeting on the vacation of a portion of Pennycress Road.
Solicitor Andrew Schantz explained the process and outlined what will happen.
Approximately 17,133 square feet of the road will be vacated and turned back to the developer.
This is an unopened paper street in Phase 1c of the Hidden Meadows subdivision.
The vacation was later approved at the general meeting.
Township Manager Bob Ibach noted the formation of a historical commission is a possibility for Upper Macungie Township.
The township is looking for old photos which would be added to the community’s history file when a commission is formed.
Any historical items may be presented to Township Secretary Kal Sostarecz.
Eight resolutions were on the docket for the evening. Three of them related to the new site for Air Products headquarters.
Air Products plans to relocate its headquarters to a 526,000-square-foot administration building, along with a 100,000-square-foot research and development building with a six-story parking area.
A discussion was held concerning sidewalks, or the absence thereof, on the plan.
Some residents felt that sidewalks should be built in the area. Brunell noted this would not be the last time the board would see this plan. At the final plan stage, sidewalks could be discussed.
Planning module approvals and the authorization for document signature relating to the sale of Independent Park rounded out that portion of the agenda.
Ibach will handle any paperwork relating to this sale.
The Farmers Market bid of $2,000 per year for the use of Grange Park will be approved after review by supervisors.
The market will be open every Saturday from May to November and bi-weekly December to April.
In other business, bids will be accepted to finish the irrigation work at Independent Park, authorization was granted to execute the agreement for fireworks July 6 at a cost of $20,400 and authorize the township police department to become a member of the Lehigh County Police Testing Consortium.
Fireworks will again be held at the Breinigsville Park with other festivities starting around 3 p.m.
